How to Make Better Drip Coffee (Yes, in Your Regular Machine)

NOMO Medium Roast box and a mug of coffee on an office desk

You don't need fancy gear to make great coffee. A regular drip machine can brew a delicious pot if you get a few basics right.

1. Use the right ratio

Start with 2 level tablespoons of ground coffee (about 10 g) for every 6 oz of water. For a full 10-cup pot, that's roughly 55–60 g of coffee. Adjust to taste from there.

2. Use good water

Coffee is about 98% water. If your tap water tastes off, use filtered water — you'll taste the difference immediately.

3. Get the grind right

Drip machines work best with a medium grind, like coarse sand. NOMO ground coffee is ready to go; if you buy whole bean, grind right before brewing.

4. Keep it clean

Old coffee oils make every pot taste bitter. Rinse the basket and carafe after each use, and descale your machine every month or two.

5. Don't leave it on the hot plate

A hot plate keeps cooking your coffee. Transfer it to a thermal carafe if you won't drink it within 20 minutes.
